Kamal Haasan’s Unnai Pol Oruvan is all set to hit the theatres tomorrow (September 18th).This film is the remake of the super hit Hindi movie, ’A Wednesday’. Malayalam megastar Mohanlal plays a prominent role in this movie. Unnai pol oruvan  is a bilingual venture, released as ‘E Nadu’ in Telugu. Unnai Pol Oruvan is directed by Chakri Toleti, US based film maker and the script is by Neeraj Paandey (story) and Ee.Raa.Murugan (dialogues). Kamal Haasan’s daughters have played an active role in unnai pol oruvan movie. Shruthi Haasan, a singer cum actor is the Music composer. This one is her first project. Akshara, his youngest daughter is the choreographer of the song ‘vaaname ellai….’ which was earlier penned by Kamal Haasan. The female lead role of this film is played by poonam kaur, Telugu artist.

Short Unnail pol oruvan review
This cannot be delivered better than this. “Yentha kuppanalum suppanalum itha seiya mudiyumnu ninaikareengala†and the answer is definitely not. No one else than Kamal Haasan and Mohan Lal can perform their roles better than this. Everyone in the film has played their role in a perfect manner. There are no gunshots or angry dialogues shouted in high pitch but still they keep you highly charged. If u really want to watch a quality movie, if u really want your money not to get wasted then u are strongly recommended to watch this movie.

Great Lal was excellent
Good movie. Better than the Hindi original, A wednesday.
Mohanlal should do more Tamil movies. He has a decent following in Tamilnadu.
Saw this movie after a long time (3rd week since release is long). I feel it is a poor cousin of Neeraj Pandey’s classic ‘A Wednesday’. Wait till you throw something at me! Let’s be practical and pragmatic while reviewing a film. This is not a fan-blog, but a review site.
Let us compare Apple to an Apple first. Anupam Kher vs Mohan Lal. Mohan Lal is undoubtedly a fine actor, but the director ‘Toleti’ has reduced his part to a mere watcher. Anupam as a commissioner was confident and was controlling the situation to a large extent (or as much the Common Man let him to). His query on reports and data was to reach a consensus and to zero down on things, not to rake up the issue.
Whereas Mohan Lal (his character IG Raghavan Marar) looked confused and intimidated by the situation. His yelling at Lakshmi was proof enough that he was under pressure, and wanted to crack this menace ‘by any means’ (any means pleeeeaaassssse). Whereas Anupam as a character (Comm. Rathore) was containing the fire from spreading to the mega city. His negotiation with Shah was level-headed and probing, and not info-seeking / sarcastic.
Now coming to the Bigger Apples. Kamal is a phenom, but here again, Naseer’s sheer simplicity rendered the Common Man a new dimension. Whoa, hold on. Take his shoulders for example. Shah’s shoulders stooped whereas Kamal stood strong and on both feet with his weight equally balanced. That made him look actually like a terrorist than a simpleton Mumbaikar (Chennaiite). Secondly his excessive use of English and the pauses before “your time starts… now” gave a clear feeling that
he was trying to push the point to the audience, that he is controlling the situation, or the ‘look at me’ factor. The other characters of the junior cops, the reporter or the 4 terrorists are too minor to be discussed and compared. But I have a point here. In the runway sequence, Ahmedullah’s dialogue’s were not as adept and situational as the Hindi version. The description of Jehad, the introduction of themselves on the speakerphone, actually ‘dastakhat’ were irrational. In the sense, Kamal’s reqt of them introducing
was not to know their names, but to confirm that ‘they are them’.
As a cynic, I can pull a 100 instances which will make U.O. look like a poor cousin of A Wednesday, but I would love to share one important example, which will give you an idea of where I am coming from. In A Wednesday, one of the most powerful and motivational dialogues (that I ever heard on Indian cinema) was when Anupam asks his juniors “Join me in the evening for a drink after this operation boys, there are things to be discussed”. Listen to the Tamil version now when Mohan lal says “You come out good in this operation and the beer is on me”.
The former sentence motivates the cops that this is a routine thing and you will come through with ease. Whereas, the latter surmounts unexplainable pressure on their heads. Just sit back and think about what I just said.
Making a remake comes with huge expectations and you need to adapt to the sensibilities of that region to tell (and sell) your story well. This has happened time and again. Pokkiri to Wanted didn’t click. Godfather to Sarkar did. Alaipayuthey to Saathiya didn’t click. Hamlet to Omkara did. The old Don (Amitabh) to Billa (Rajni and now Ajith) did not click, whereas the new Don (Shahrukh) was made by Farhan Akhtar with modern sensibilities. Its about how you adapt your story and do something new, without changing the premise of the story.
I am a South Indian, brought up in the North and so I understand both the worlds equally well. On a personal front, Kamal is still my fav hero. But “Unnaipol..” didn’t click. More likely because the crew has not put in major efforts to re-carve the movie, and was copied scene to scene. There are even a few ‘continuity’ bloopers which I could share if I had time.
Overall a 4.5/5 movie has been reduced to a 3/5.
