Mammooty, fondly called as Mammookka by his fans was born on September 7, 1953 as Mohammed Kutty to Ismail and Fatima in Chempu, Kerala. Mohammed Kutty had three sisters and two younger brothers. He studied in Sacred Heart College, Thevara to get his pre degree and studied in Mahraja Arts College to pursue his bachelor degree.  He then joined Law at Ernakulam Law College and he practiced law in Manjeri for two years. Once he has admitted that he with his friends have streaked through the streets of Ernakulam for a bet while he was studying law. It was the period when he developed his interest towards cinema while haven done a small role already in the film Anubhavangal Paalichakal, 1971 during his college days. He married Sulfaath in the year 1980 and they have a daughter Surmi born on 1982 and a son, Dulquar Salman who was born on 1986. Mentioning about his marriage Mammookka has said that “I became prosperous only after my marriage. My first film chance came on the sixth day of our marriage. My wife always makes suggestions about my work, but never actively interferes. As a critic of my performances, she can be very severe!”

He got his first film Vilkkanundu Swapnanga relased in 1980 directed by Azad and screen played by M.T. Vasudevan Nair who discovered and let the world to know Mammooty’s acting skill. After that Mammookka acted in so many films and impressed many fans of South India. He is known for performing any kind of role with utmost fine and ease. He got his first State award for best supporting actor for the film Ahimsa directed by I.V. Sasi in 1981. Then he got State award for the Best actor in 1984 for the film Adiyozhukkukal directed by I.V. Sasi. He acted in 150 films in the period 1982-1986 and as hero in 35 films. In 1987, the films New Delhi and Thaniyavarthanam played a major role in turning a skilled actor into a Superstar. He has won so many State awards and National awards then. He was also honored by the great civilian award, Padma Shreee in arts and cinema category in the year 1998. Mammookka has won almost all the film related awards awarded in India. He was titled as ‘Male Sex Symbol of Kerala’ in the year 2004. Along with the veteran actor Mohanlal, Mammooty shares the pride of being a megastar in the South Indian film industry.

Apart from being a hero in films Mammokka is also a hero in real life. Numbers of charity works, social works that he does and supports are countless. He is playing a major part in   Pain and Palliative Centre, centre to improve the life cancer patients, Street India Movement, Donating Foods and goods to orphanage, Kazhcha- free eye care and treatment and so many. He is been the brand ambassador of many international projects which includes Akshaya-Information Technology dissemination, South Indian bank and e-lite-literacy program in Kerala.
